THOUGHTS FROM A HOCKEY MOM You Know You Spend Too Much Time at the Rink When...
Congratulations to the Minor Atom Red team
For most of the nine year olds on the team it was their first out of
town tournament. An outstanding team effort and great tournament weekend
for the boys. Every player registered points on the score sheet with goals
and/or assists over the course of the six games. Special thanks to goaltender
Domenic who registered one shutout, stopped almost 100 shots and allowed
only seven goals in six games. BILL BUSS TOURNAMENT ATOM 2009 Champions
Applewood Coyotes : Atom 'A' Champions
Sunday 7:00 am saw both the Coyotes and Reston Raiders face in the semi final game. Again the game started out hard and fast. This time the coyote team scored first and that set the tone. Both team traded goals until early in the third period when Julian Lankstead made a breakout pass to Dylan Bell, who looked up and sent a pass to Brady Galinski. Brady stepped in over the the Raiders blue and sniped a shot short side on the Raiders goalie for a 4-3 lead. Brady and Jack Mills scored empty net goals to end the game. Goaltender Ryan Johnston made diving saves to keep the game close. Sunday 2:40 peggged the West Hill Golden Hawks vs Applewood Coyotes. Parents, grandparents, friends and family attended the final game. The game was fast and exciting. Applewood jumped ahead with goals in the second and early into the third period. Each goal was set up by hard team work work. Brady Galinski was the recipient of team effort as he was set up to score the two goals. Ryan Johnston stood on his head and made massive saves at times to keep his team in the game. Applewood won the tournament 2-1. Minor Peewee Coyotes are Ace Bailey Tournament Champions
They met one of the local teams, Niagara Falls, in the finals on Sunday afternoon. After a 1 1 tie in regulation, the game went into an unusual overtime system where you played 1 minute buzzered shifts. It went 4 on 4 with no goal, then 4 on 4 again with no goal. Next was 3 on 3 for a minute and Applewood scored; however officials decided there was no time on the clock. Therefore there was another 3 on 3 shift with no goal. The next shift was 2 on 2 - no goal again. Finally in the sixth minute and with 1 on 1 format, Matthew Cairns scored for Applewood. The Applewood fans went wild. The team received Championship rings for their efforts. A huge congratulations goes out to the entire team, especially the two goalies, Bradley Simon and Tyler Randa. And as always thanks from the team to the most organized team Manager, Vic Wiwchar. A great time was had by all. APPLEWOOD COYOTES TO HOST MIDGET
A PROVINCIAL HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP Some of the best Ontario 17-18 year olds will
be coming to Mississauga April 10-12, 2009 The OHF Provincials pits the best "A" level teams from the Greater Toronto Hockey League, Ontario Minor Hockey Association, Alliance Hockey, and the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. Teams will play a four-game round robin, then semi-finals, with the top two teams advancing to the championship game. The Mississauga Hockey League will have strong representation by the Applewood Coyotes "A" team, as the host team. This team finished in first place in regular season play and represented the MHL in the Metro Playdowns in February. Tournament Chair, Brian Webster, says Applewood is proud to be hosting this prestigious event, with the backing of a committed team of volunteers, and a strong partnership with the MHL. Applewood hosted the OHF Peewee A Championship in 2008 with great success, and will draw on their experience to elevate this year's Midget Championship into a memorable occasion for all participants. The tournament committee is looking to the private sector to raise $20,000 to cover its operating costs. Donations will be used to pay for ice rental, referees, timekeepers, awards, programs and a welcome banquet. Product donations are welcome. The parent group from the Applewood Coyotes Midget "A" team is currently soliciting sponsors and donations. Anyone interested in donating can visit the Applewood Hockey Association

or Applewood Hockey Night at the Mississauga St. Mike's Major's game A big thank you to the 650 Association members and their families who attended Applewood Hockey Night at the Mississauga St. Mike's Major's game on Friday, November 21st! The fans were treated to an exciting 4-3 shootout win for the Majors over the Oshawa Generals and phenom, John Tavares. Congratulations to the Atom Green team, who sold a whopping 93 tickets to win the post-game ice! They also boast the two top individual ticket sellers, Gianni Ginocchi (50 tickets) and Kassandra De Oliveira (18 tickets). Gianni and Kassandra had the honour of skating in the pre-game warm-up. Congratulations to the pre novice Hawks team, who sold the most tickets
and participated in the intermission mini-game. Also congratulations to Minor Bantam Green player, Nicholas Sequeira,
who won the draw for the game-worn jersey. It was a great night of hockey
and fun for our teams and great to see the Applewood blue and gold in
the stands! COYOTES SR. MIDGET "A" TEAM WINS PETERBOROUGH THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT
'Coyotes' Beat Arch Rival 'Wolves' to Win 3rd Consecutive MHL Playoff Championship The Applewood Coyotes topped the MHL Bantam 'A' division by beating their arch rival Credit Valley Wolves to take a 3rd consecutive playoff championship. This great rivalry began almost 3 years ago and continued this year with both teams again leaving the pack behind at mid season - and continued to battle all year long. This year the Wolves finished 1st in the regular season with 59 points (27-3-5 record and a 116/38 GF/GA average) and the Coyotes 2nd with 58 points (25-2-8 record and a 155/56 average), 20 points ahead of the 3rd place team. The two teams even split their series (1-3-1) to help set the stage for the playoff battle. It's been a fascinating 3 years to watch these two very different style teams achieve success their own way. The Coyotes on the one hand with their free wheeling, open ice, high-powered offensive-minded style (the defense and even the goalies regularly got involved with the offence), to the Wolves on the other hand with their hard skating, hard checking, tight disciplined defensive-minded system. Funny how there's something still unsettling about a team that can win in double-digits one day, and the next day come out with a 1-1 draw, even when you're still dealing with 14 year old boys. And true to form, once again, it was the Coyotes who stumbled in the quarters and the semis while the Wolves came into the Finals again as the only undefeated team in the playoffs (6-0). With no love lost between these two teams and both knowing that the Finals will settle it, every game produced the expected hard fought grudge match; solid end-to-end action, bone crushing hits, great offence, great defense and great goaltending. And even when lady luck did play her part (at both ends), goalposts were rarely grazed, the "DING" could be heard throughout the rink. So, full marks to both teams for that great effort and it was a gutsy performance by the Coyotes to beat this favoured Wolves team, and in 4 games. In retrospect, it's interesting that it was the Coyotes system that once again prevailed to take the Championship. The reason? One can pontificate and analyze all summer - that's Hockey! But one thing is for certain, and admittedly a difficult balance to achieve, but as long as kids remain respectful, play with discipline and are allowed to have FUN while developing and learning a great skill - we ALL come out winners! Let's keep it going Mississauga! Congratulations to these two great teams for an outstanding run in the
Mississauga Hockey League, but especially to the Applewood Coyotes who
always played with a genuine free spirit, a wonderful enthusiasm and a
true passion for this incredible game that we all cherish. It is a true
testament of the great work of the MHL and specifically the Applewood
Hockey Association. Well done Applewood! ![]() The 2008 Applewood Bantam 'A' Coyotes are: Michael Porfirio (7), Christopher Baron (9), Ben Chadbourne (14), Christian Verlezza (19), Bryce Hansen (23), Jeff Campana (25), Scott Clark (26), Scott Agnew (27), Mitchell Doorey (29), Kevin Marsh (40), Adrian Rinella (61), Jonathon Barbaro (81), Michael Iannarelli (87), Ryan Harrison (97) and the 2 goalies Tyler Dix (30) and Adam Pereira (68); HC - Paul Agnew; ACs - Dave Clark, Doug Harrison and Vinni Barbaro; Trainer - Dr. Mike Kates; Managers - Jacqui Agnew/Lorenzo Verlezza.

The final was against one of their cross town rivals, Port Credit. They posted another shutout, this time 4-0. Their goals against average in the 4 games was a startling 1.00 GAA. Great goaltending by both Bradley Simon and Tyler Randa. Congratulations to all the players and a special thanks to their Manager, Vic Wiwchar for his attention to detail.
Coyotes Battle Back to Defeat Avalanche in West Mall Early-Bird Bantam A Tournament Congratulations to the Applewood Coyotes Bantam "A" Team who had to battle back to beat an undefeated Toronto Avalanche team in the West Mall Early-Bird Tournament final. The Avalanche had the best round robin series record, defeating Applewood 2-0 and only allowing 1 goal against in their 3 games. But when the semis produced two very close games, with the Avalanche defeating the Humber Valley Sharks 3-2 and the Coyotes defeating the Vaughan Panthers 3-2, the stage was set for the big rematch in the Final. The final proved to be the best game yet with solid hitting, great scoring
chances and great goaltending at both ends that left the Coyotes leading
2-1 at the end of the 2nd. As tensions continued to mount the Coyotes
got into penalty trouble in the 3rd but the boys dug deep to hang on to
a 3-2 lead in the dying minutes of the game and then score their 2nd short-handed
goal of the period to take the Championship 4-2. Congratulations to all
the teams for a great, hard-fought tournament. APPLEWOOD COYOTES PEEWEE "A" TEAM EARNS TWO
PRE-SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS The Peewee "A" Coyotes were a howling success in pre season tournaments this September! They participated in back-to-back tournament weekends and came away victorious in both. Their first championship was the Toronto Aces Tournament during Sept. 5-9. The team went undefeated in 5 straight games, winning 3-2 against the Toronto Avalanche, 3-1 over Credit Valley Wolves, 3-1 over the Toronto Ice Dogs and 3-1 over the Perington Blades. Despite the fact that several team members were ill, and they were trailing the Vaughan Rangers late in the third period of the championship game, the Coyotes dug deep, and tied the game late. Lucas Motyka #10 scored the winner in dramatic fashion with 43 seconds left in overtime. The following weekend they participated in the Huskies Tournament. They beat the Huskies 1-0, the Markham Waxers 3-2, Leaside Kings 4-1 and tied the Humber Valley Sharks 1-1. They met the North York Knights in the final, prevailing for their second championship 2-0. Darian Zigante, #26, was named the Tournament MVP. Congratulations, Darian!
The Peewee "A" Coyotes are: David Miskus #3, Jacob Hale #4, Lucas Motyka #10, Alex Zulys #11, Benjamin Zucchet #13, Mitchell Emmons #15, Anthony Franceschi #19, Anthony Francioni #24, Darian Zigante #26, Gabriel Roda #27, Andrew Lalonde-Welby #30, Anthony Skrinjar #39, Christian Rivest #66, Matthew Rocca #77, Scott Nutter #87, Ethan Daniel #91, and Jeremy Ralphs #96. They are coached by Andy Hale, Head Coach, Serge Rivest and Tony Rocca, Assistant Coaches, Les Motyka, Trainer and Maria Skrinjar, Manager. Minor Atom "A"
Coyotes win Humberview Huskies Early Bird Tournament Coyotes Minor Bantam A are Solid Gold in MHL Playoffs Its a rare and memorable achievement when a relatively new team wins all 3 minor hockey city Championships in the same year - the MHL League championship, the Metro (GTHL) championship and the playoff championship. But the Applewood Coyotes MBantam A team did just that by winning the coveted Ice Dogs Cup beating their arch rival Credit Valley Wolves in 4 games. It was an outstanding performance by the Coyotes to not loose a game to this talented Wolves squad who came into the MHL Finals as the only undefeated team in the playoffs (6-0). In the regular season these two talented teams left the pack mid season - and continued to battle all year long. The Coyotes won their regular season with a 28-4-3 record with an impressive 138/52 GF/GA average in the 35 game schedule (next was CV with 93/38 GF/GA). The team went undefeated in three A level tournaments and finished 1st in their division in the 'AA' tournament that they entered in the fall. All in all, in the total 76 games played, the team managed an equally impressive 285/76 GF/GA average. Yet it was the season end Bill Buss tournament that personified the teams true spirit, as their last round robin game went into 5 OT periods (4-on-4, then 3-on-3, then 2-on-2) only to see the Coyotes Mitchell Doorey (#27) score in the dying seconds of the 8th period to eliminate a determined Oakville Rangers team. The win kept the Coyotes undefeated in their division (4-0) and pitted them against the other divisions top team from Woodstock (also 4-0). The semi-final saw yet another tie (2-2) and 3 more OT periods of great two-way hockey. With both teams missing by inches and looking to capitalize on a lucky bounce it was Woodstock that got the break and scored in the 3rd OT to advance to the finals. What a thrill it is to see 13 year-old kids play with such heart and passion (and succeed) all the while still having such a great time. To call this a team of Great Character would be an understatement.

Coyotes M. Bantam 'A' First in GTHL, City Championships Congratulations to the Applewood Minor Bantam 'A' team who finished 1st in the prestigious GTHL City Championships (officially known as the Metro 'A' Play-Downs). The round robin tournament featured the league champions from the GTHL East Division, the West Division, the Mississauga Hockey League and the Scarborough Hockey Association. The tournament provided some excellent hockey, befitting the Coyotes season where they dominated early to beat West Hill 5-0, then fell behind and battled back to beat West Mall 4-3 and then had to grind out a tough 1-0 victory against a strong Hillcrest team to remain the only undefeated team in the tournament. It was a fitting end to a thrilling season that saw this team of quirky characters slowly gel together to develop speed and skill to match their unquestionable determination. Throughout this season the Coyotes evolved to become a team with good depth; from their potent offense that at times could score beautiful goals at will, to the rock solid defense that backed them and kept them moving forward, to the impeccable goaltending that robbed the opposition of many sure goals. But the key to it all was the heart - coming straight out of the dressing room - that pushed these kids to play their best and many times it was a combination of different kids that stepped up to play through the adversity and show true leadership on the ice. Congratulations on an outstanding season Applewood! A BIG thank-you too,
to the great parents, families and friends that supported this team and
cheered them on - all year long.
Novice red Coyotes defend BMO Cup in London Sunday Feb. 4th, the Applewood Coyotes Novice Red team faced cross-town rivals, West Mall, in the final of the BMO Cup in London and skated to a 4-1 victory! The Coyotes opened round robin play with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Oakridge Aeros on Friday afternoon. Early Saturday morning Applewood played the host team West London. This game ended with a 5-2 Coyote victory. Later Saturday afternoon the Coyotes faced undefeated SSE Wild. The Wild jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Applewood tied the score with 2 goals in a span of a minute and a half late in the third. Thirty seconds later SSE came down and scored the go ahead goal before adding an empty netter with under a minute to go. Applewood lost 4-2 and ended up in third place after the round robin. The semi's took place Sunday morning with Applewood facing SSE for the second time in less than 18 hours. The game went back and forth with both goalies making some terrific saves. The Coyotes finally slipped one past the SSE goalie late in the second and added an insurance marker in the third to set up a meeting with West Mall in the finals. Applewood had played West Mall four previous times this year, splitting the season series two games a piece. The first period solved nothing as both teams had many shots but couldn't find the back of the net. West Mall struck first early in the second before The Coyotes erupted for four unanswered goals en route to their defense of the BMO Cup they won last year. Congratulations to all the kids on a terrific tournament, well done
Coyotes!

Back on track, and on the big ice at the NHL Glendale / Jobing.com Arena, the Applewood Coyotes now prepared to face the West Valley Wolves of Southern California. Big and fast, West Valley posed a serious threat as nothing short of a decisive win would assure the Applewood Coyotes a place in the finals. With the help of forward Dylan Madges second hat trick of the tournament and the shared goal tending of Kashif Sheikh and Anthony Varano, the Applewood Coyotes held the West Valley Wolves to one goal while posting a 9 1 final score. The finals took place today at 12:15 MST against the Sacremento Capital Thunder. The Thunders reputation preceded them as word was received that the Thunder had been California State Champions in their Pee Wee year and were undefeated this season in both tournament and regular season play. The Applewood Coyotes hit the ice hard and fast and set the pace of the game with back to back goals by forward Jesse Silva at 10:34 and 9:53 in the first period. From that point forward the press was on as the Applewood Coyotes, and goaltender Kashif Sheikh, held the Thunder to one goal in a 7 1 win. Denise Parco, Minor Bantam A wins Humberview Huskies Tournament The Applewood Coyotes Minor Bantam A team, under Head Coach, Paul Agnew, were undefeated in the Humberview Huskies Early Bird Hockey Invitational recently. The team limited their goals against to 3, defeating teams from Downsview, Caledon, Clarkson and Markham and meeting last year's MHL champion, Erindale, in the semi-finals. They won 4-1 over Meadowvale Mohawks in the final game. Captain, Michael Porfirio, was named the division MVP; goaltenders Tyler Dix and Adam Pereira also put in spectacular performances. Congratulations to the entire team! Pre Season Tournament Results On September 7 - 10, 2006 the Bantam "A" Coyotes participated in the Toronto Aces September Classic Hockey Tournament and came home with the Bantam "A" Championship and a 5 - 0 undefeated record. And it was no easy ride. All teams played hard and long in search of the Championship Cup but the Coyotes triumphed over all contenders. After the September Classic the Coyotes rolled right into the Brian Steele Memorial Hockey Tournament hosted by the Hillcrest Summits. The Brian Steele Memorial proved to be a true test to the talents and the determination of the Applewood Coyotes. The caliber of play was very high and it was give and take all the way. The Applewood Coyotes once again arrived at the final game undefeated, however, the final game proved to be the greatest challenge of the two tournaments. With three minutes left to play in the third period, the Coyotes found themselves down 4 - 2. What combination of coaching, skills, determination and heart came together in that last three minutes can never be truly determined, but the result was two more Applewood goals to force a 4 - 4 score and an overtime period. With energy, skill, and even more heart Applewood's Paul Gorman fired a pass up the middle that was picked up by Centre Jesse Silva. The opposing goalie came out to challenge Silva and Jesse cut out around the goalie and fired home the winning goal. The end result was back-to-back Tournament Championships and an 11 - 0 record on the way into the regular season beginning on September 26th. The September "early bird" tournaments are the testing ground for the upcoming year's teams. In the course of these two tournaments, the Applewood Coyotes have met and defeated the GTHL's top three seeded Minor Bantam "A" teams from the 2005 - 2006 season.
